I wish to provide another update regarding Canada’s response to the COVID-19 public health crisis. This situation continues to evolve and Kadri Law continues to monitor the same and report to our valued clients whenever possible.
Today, Kadri Law successfully processed a number of different work permit applications at the POE. All applications were processed and approved by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Officers notwithstanding certain challenges that exist at present and given the on-going uncertainty we continue to face. It appears that today the CBSA was taking a “business as usual” approach to work permit application processing, this in addition to the enhanced screening practices and procedures that have already been adopted the CBSA. However, we know that this may change as early as possibly midnight tonight. This is a fluid situation that is changing hour-by-hour and day-by-day.
Kadri Law has learned that the US and Canada are currently preparing to issue a joint statement in the next 24-48 hours. It is anticipated that there are on-going negotiations about possible suspension of non-essential travel between the two countries. However, US and Canadian administrations are still negotiating the definition of “non-essential” and other key matters before any deal is finalized. We also believe it is the desire of both the US and Canada to ensure business and trade between the two countries can continue notwithstanding the extraordinary measures being taken to slow the spread and outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.
Kadri Law remains hopeful that the anticipated joint US/Canadian announcement, and any restrictions that may be put in place, will allow for the necessary flexibility for cross border trade while also doing everything possible to protect the health and safety of Americans and Canadians alike.
